Quinn’s latest project is called Re-Wined, a podcast she hosts with friends and industry colleagues Katie Garrett and Annie Moore, where they revisit the films of their youths and see how they hold up. I love the show. It’s funny and topical and has the chemistry and confidence of confidants. Addition to being one of the on-mic talents, Quinn also engineers and produces each episode.
Starting a podcast is no small leap into the unknown, but having known Quinn for a few years now, I recognized the move as another arrow in the quiver of her consummate hustle. That hustle is why I wanted to get her on the show. I’m endlessly curious about how artists make it work in the intensely competitive art and entertainment industries and I wanted to know her particular version of the make-it-happen-for-yourself story.
Quinn talks about the necessity that nudged her into less comfortable territory and the great gain that came of it. The pandemic basically put the entire industry on ice, so she pivoted. She sought out opportunities to work behind the camera — from being a personal assistant, to helping with catering, wardrobe — less glam, more grunt.
The result was an increase in both her skillset as a filmmaker and her respect for the craft itself. It’s something a lot of actors never bother to learn — i.e. what the people behind the camera do — which, as a career strategy in today’s climate, is about as smart as smacking a rock for water.
Quinn continues to book roles as an actor — more recently in I Want You Back with Charlie Day and Jenny Slate — but as often as not, you can find her on sets throughout the southeast, doing what she can to make another movie happen. Hers is a philosophy about serving the story with everything you’ve got, about growing as an artist and a storyteller, and about making your dreams come true by participating in the world as it is, and not how it was yesterday.
