Mason Mecartea is an actor and director based in Nashville, best known for his role as Dan Shelter in Stranger Things, and Cole in Damien Leone's Terrifier 3, which, as of this writing, is the #1 movie in the country.
Mason has plenty to be happy about in terms of his success as an actor, but I wanted to have him on the podcast for a different reason. To my mind, he embodies a critical shift on the part of filmmakers hoping to be successful in an intensely competitive industry: he captains his own projects whenever he’s not working on someone else’s. He writes, directs, and produces short films. He knows his way around a camera, has a working knowledge of industry-standard editing software, and is commonly seen on the sets throughout the Nashville, helping out on other people’s films.
Maybe it’s this 360º approach to the work — acting, producing, community building — that helps explain his laid-back, positive outlook, and even his rapid rise in a business where good mental health is less common than it should be.
And since this is our first day back after the fall break, I want to say a quick welcome! This is the first episode of Season 2 of the Morse Code Podcast. Expect another offering of weekly episodes featuring conversations with entrepreneurially-minded creatives in music, film, and writing. The goal is to give you practical tips on how to move forward with your own work, as well as inspiration to keep you close to the heart of what drives you as a working creative in this ever-shifting landscape. We’re here and we’re doing it! You can do it too.
