can you spot the easter egg in our new music video?
pop over to youtube today starting at 2pm central for the premiere of "This Love"
The official video for my newest song This Love premieres today at 2pm central on YouTube Vevo. If you enjoy what I do, take a three minute break from your regularly scheduled torrent of cinematically depicted crises and join. It would mean a lot to me. I’ll be hanging in the chat if you’d like to say hello.
Watch the world premiere of the Official Music Video for This Love.
The video was directed by Tyler Weisenauer and stars Mason Mecartea, Emma Naumovska... and my family. In 3 distinct genres — Western, the Mod-sixties, and Dystopian — it explores the reflexive interplay between fiction and reality and that elusive nexus where imaginary love and real love meet. A big topic and one I think about all the time.
As a person who pretty much lives professionally in his head, I’m always in danger of choosing the promise of a self-constructed illusion over the messy reality of life as it is, of relationships as they are. Relationships are the true loci of love, after all, not the carefully, artificially constructed representational world of memes, movies, songs, paintings, stories, dolls, which are as apt to confuse and distort as they are to inspire and encourage.
This is a wordy way of saying: songs make you crazy. And when the song is over you should find your lover and kiss her on the mouth.
After doing this — writing songs and stories and performing them for nearly thirty years — I (finally) notice I am mostly interested in life outside of art. Meaning the object to which my work points is located in the place where art isn’t. The mundane world of the quotidian where banana-avocado paste is daily scraped from the floor beneath my daughter’s high chair.
That is where life is lived properly. Art’s job is to make the scraping bearable.
My personal version of hell would be to live in a world without meaning. With a lot of help from Tyler help I was able to portray my struggle (and often folly, let’s be honest) to use the imaginary to give meaning to the actual without setting the whole enterprise ablaze.
This Love is the 4th piece of official music I’ve released since March. I’ll list the tracks and album covers below. They will link to Spotify which we all agree is evil but is still where you go to listen to music. If you find meaning in my songs, stories, podcast episodes or earnest but imperfect effort to make of the world a softer a couch to sit on, consider becoming a paid subscriber, or buy me a cup of coffee by kicking a couple bucks at the venmo. I never make these requests but the youtube channels I watch do it all the time and it doesn’t bother me so maybe it won’t bother you either.
Lastly I have some big announcements coming up. The short story is, the next phase of Morse Code is about to begin. Thanks for sticking around.
See you at 2pm on the YouTube.
